Accelerated Resolution Therapy

A Scientific Approach

to Emotional Healing

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a brief, evidence-based therapy that uses eye movements and guided visualization to help clients quickly process and resolve distressing memories, emotions, and physical sensations.

If you are struggling with any of the following, Accelerated Resolution Therapy can help:

How Accelerated Resolution Therapy Works

Our brains have a natural ability called neuroplasticity, which allows them to change and adapt by forming new connections between brain cells. This means the brain can reorganize itself, learn new skills, and even recover from injuries by creating new pathways.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy uses neuroplasticity to help the brain process and heal from traumatic memories by guiding it to create new, healthier connections.

In simple terms, Accelerated Resolution Therapy helps you take control of your mind, allowing you to revisit and manage difficult memories with confidence and strength.

  • Comfort and Safety: The therapist will ensure you feel comfortable and safe. They’ll explain the process, answer any questions, and discuss what you hope to achieve.
  • Setting Goals: You’ll identify a specific problem or traumatic memory you want to address.
  • Guided Eye Movements: The therapist will guide you through a series of rapid eye movements while you think about the distressing memory. This mechanism allows reintegration of traumatic memories. This technique is thought to mimic the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep phase, during which memory consolidation and emotional processing occur.
  • Voluntary Image Replacement: While engaging in eye movements, you’ll be guided as you visualize the distressing memory and then imagine it changing in a way that feels neutral or even positive. A process called Voluntary Image Replacement is used which allows Cognitive Restructuring. Which basically means to reframe negative beliefs and perceptions associated with traumatic memories.

By challenging maladaptive thought patterns and replacing them with more adaptive ones, ART helps individuals develop a healthier perspective on their past experiences and their impact on their present lives. This results in a decrease or complete resolution of associated symptoms and an overall sense of empowerment, growth, resilience, and emotional healing.

  • Rewiring Memories: ART involves visualizing distressing memories while engaging in specific eye movements. This process helps the brain reprocess these memories, changing how they are stored and reducing their emotional impact. This is a direct application of neuroplasticity, as it involves forming new, less distressing neural connections related to the memory.
  • Creating New Associations: Through ART, the brain can form new associations with previously traumatic memories. Instead of being overwhelmed by negative emotions, the person can create a more neutral or positive narrative. This again showcases neuroplasticity, as the brain adapts and changes its neural pathways to alter the emotional response.
  • Strengthening Positive Pathways: By repeatedly practicing these techniques, ART strengthens new, healthier neural pathways. This means that over time, the brain becomes more efficient at responding to previously triggering memories in a calm and controlled manner, demonstrating the brain’s ability to change and adapt through neuroplasticity.
Upon the completion of ART Sessions, people typically feel empowered, and notice a decrease in problematic symptoms and distressing responses.
