When people think of therapy, or more specifically psychotherapy, some may develop a
rise of negative emotions, as therapy did not always have the best reputation in the past. Some
people may worry that psychotherapy is only for “crazy” people, or that it is for “weak” people,
when in actuality, many people can benefit from psychotherapy for a wide variety of reasons.
Therapy is not for the weak or for “crazy” people as that’s a myth. In my opinion, those who seek
therapy should be seen as strong, because it is not easy for anyone. As time goes on, it is also
becoming more normal so the negative stigmas hopefully will decline more and more.
A common thought for people and the topic of therapy, is that what happened in the past
is in the past and we should be over it, but that is not true! The truth is, many things that happen
in the past have an effect on our present selves and what can happen in the future. Our past
experiences help us understand how to navigate our present and future through lessons, trial &
error, and help.
People may fear that their therapist may not be helpful because they do not know them,
but that actually can be the most helpful. This is because an unbiased, trained therapist can
provide a new perspective on what you may express in confidence. Your therapist and therapy
as a whole are designed to support you, not dismantle you.
