Jenn and HuskiesMeet Jenn Ortiz!

Utilizing Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), solution-focused, and mindfulness strategies, Jenn works with her clients to build positive coping skills and effectively manage negative mental health symptoms. She specializes in working with pre-teens, teens and young adults and is currently accepting new clients in our Middletown and Monroe locations.

Jenn in her own words….

What is the most important thing you have learned in the last five years?

Most importantly, be kind to yourself. Also, success isn’t measured by perfection. Many people get lost in trying to find perfection, but true joy can be found in just being you (imperfections and all!).

What is your favorite part about working for Nourish Your Mind?

Working with clients in a nurturing environment that shares the same ideals I do for physical health and mental wellness.

Tell me how you first got involved with Mental Health . . .

I have always had a passion to work with people and help others. As a psychotherapist, I am able to aid and empower my clients in navigating their toughest obstacles and challenge fears. Sharing these moments of growth with clients is incredibly special and I feel grateful to share in the experience.

How would you describe your style as a Therapist?

My approach is an integrated style, tying together both mental health and physical well-being. I like placing my client in the “driver’s seat” of their treatment with a client-centered approach and guiding clients in developing positive coping strategies. My goal is to work with clients over time on identifying and addressing the root of their negative mental health, in addition to tackling dysfunctional symptoms impacting day-to-day functioning.

Jenn Aerial YogaWhat might someone be surprised to know about you?

I actually began my work career in the fashion industry! Because of my love of working with people, I initially was drawn to fashion marketing and worked as an event planner in NYC and NJ.

Motto or personal mantra?

“If we don’t change the direction we are headed, we will end up where we are going” -Chinese Proverb

What are three career lessons you’ve learned thus far?

  1.    It is never too late in life to pursue your passion or change directions!
  2.   Always be open to listening to advice and guidance, but let the final decision be true to your instincts.
  3.   Success starts from the inside out. Personal well-being goes hand in hand with personal success!

What do you do when you aren’t working?

When I’m not at NYM I am usually outside! I have two, VERY active huskies: Titan (5) and Koda (2). In our little pack, we love to explore the Tri-State area and hike, camp, or just walk down a local trail. When I am not with my two furry children, I love exploring other states and countries. A personal favorite travel destination of mine is Istanbul. The culture there is so beautiful and welcoming, with a melting pot of different religions, languages, and cuisines given its unique position. Even thousands of miles away from my own zip code I feel at home!

If you were an animal what would you be? And why?

I would want to be a Mustang. I used to ride horses throughout my childhood and I believe they are super intuitive and loving creatures. There is also something about being able to run out in the open, unrestrained that sounds absolutely thrilling and freeing.

What children’s character can you relate with most? And why?

Definitely Spirit from “Spirit stallion of the Cimarron” (clearly a horse trend here 🙂 ). I identify with his character strongly, because he forges his own path in a world which is trying to force their societal norms onto him. He is adventurous, fun-loving, and shows your character is determined by your values.
